Visual Arts Subject Guide

Bibliography technically means a list of all the works written on a particular subject.

More appropriate titles are Works Cited or .References.  This is a list of all sources you actually cited in your assignment.

 

Selected Bibliography is a list of all the sources you consulted in writing your paper, but not necessarily cited from.

This list is placed at the end of your assignment, usually on a separate page or pages.

  • Each citation is started on a new line, flush with the left side margin.
  • Second and subsequent lines in the same citation are indented 1.27 cm, or to match the paragraph indenting used in your assignment.
  • The citations are arranged alphabetically.
  • A double line space separates each citation.

The formatting for the bibliographic citations is DIFFERENT to that used in the footnotes. See table below

Bibliography Footnote
Order: sources are listed in alphabetic order Order: citations are listed in the order that they appear in the text
Numbering: no numbering. Sources are listed alphabetically by author surname. Numbering: sequential numbers

Indenting: First line is flush with left margin. Other lines are indented to match paragraphs in the body of assignment (5 spaces)

Authors: family name first, then given name, and any subsequent authors with the given name first. Authors: Given name first, then family name
Publication details: No parenthesis (brackets) used Publication details: location, publisher and year in parenthesis
Punctuation: uses full stops to separate items within a citation Punctuation: Uses commas to separate items within a citation
Pages: No pages are included Pages: Gives specific page (or range of pages) from which you took the information

Format of bibliographic citations

Family name, Given name. Title: Subtitle. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year.

Note the order, formatting and punctuation.

  • WHO: the author’s family name comma given name/s full stop
  • WHAT: title in italics. Use upper case at the start of title and subtitle and all major words full stop
  • WHERE: publication details. City colon. (Add state or country abbreviation if city unclear, separated from city with a comma). Publisher comma
  • WHEN: Year of publication full stop
